RESEARCH

Clients will have MOCA research a variety of topics, both personal and professional. We’ve done research projects to figure out what strange thing is happening with their website, find the best date night restaurants in their city, and compare the pricing and features of different programs to help them determine which to use.

While research is generally a pretty straight forward, find-the-answer type of project, you still want to take the particular client into account. You’re not just recommending the best newsletter platform, you’re recommending the best newsletter platform for them, taking their goals and their business into account.

Best practice for research projects is to:

Organize the information into an easily digestible format. This could include bold headers, bullet points, or spreadsheets where applicable. It sounds funny, but putting research into a pretty format always helps it process easier!

Summarize! Our clients are all very busy, and more than that, they trust us. After you’ve researched your topic, provide a brief summary of what you’ve found and what you would recommend based on what you know about the client. Write the summary as if you’re speaking to the client directly.

Sample Projects

Try it out with one of the sample projects below

PROJECT 1

Time:

Please spend up to 1 hour on this project

Sites / Programs Used:

Google

Resources:

Sample Client Profile #1

Sample Client Profile #2

Instructions:

1. Choose one of the sample clients above and get to know them by reviewing their profile and their website. Pay attention to their voice, the ideal client that they are trying to reach, and their area of expertise.

2. The sample client has decided to start sending out a regular newsletter, but they don’t have any platform to do so. For this project, we are going to help them find the platform that is the best fit for them.

3. Please research newsletter platforms to gather information about pricing and features. Make the information easy to digest and to compare. Some of the main platforms that we use are Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign and Converkit, but add in other competitors as you see fit.

4. The sample client wants to be able to send out emails to the 3,000 subscribers that they have already collected. They don’t need any other features at the moment, but down the road they would like to set up an autoresponder series that goes out to new readers when they sign up for the mailing list.

5. Please note any questions or concerns that should be passed along to the client to make sure we are suggesting the best possible fit.

PROJECT 2

Time:

Please spend 1-2 hours on this project

Sample Client Profile #1

Sample Client Profile #2

Instructions:

1. Choose one of the sample clients above and get to know them by reviewing their profile and their website. Pay attention to their voice, the ideal client that they are trying to reach, and their area of expertise.

2. The sample client would like to reach a wider audience and is hoping to do so by getting interviewed as a guest on podcasts. For this project, we are going to help them find podcasts that would be a good fit.

3. We are looking for podcasts that cover topics that match the sample client’s key topics and that seem to share the sample client’s key values.

4. We must, of course, make sure that the podcasts that we find do have guests on the show.

5. The sample client hasn’t done very many interviews yet, so we will want to aim for podcasts that aren’t toooooo difficult to get on. We’re not looking for interviews with Oprah here. However, we do want to make sure that the podcast has a somewhat engaged and growing following (vs. one episode that nobody has ever heard). We can get a sense of this by looking at the number of followers that they have on iTunes, Spotify, or other podcast outlet, the number of reviews they have, the frequency of and engagement with social media posts, etc.

6. Google away to find your podcasts! A simple search such as “Top entrepreneurial podcasts 2021” will populate articles with the top 25-100 podcasts that are a “must listen-to.” This is a super-efficient way to build your wishlist of shows as long as they are a good match.

7. If you find a good fit, save the podcast name, website, contact name, contact (preferably a direct email address, but sometimes it’s a link to a form), and any notes about topic or guest preferences that the podcast has.
